How to Pitch a VC the Marc Andreessen Way (aka Pitching Hacks at Stanford)

Part of my business is advising startups on how to raise money from various types of investors.  I really enjoy the opportunity to meet with entrepreneurs and get infected with their passion.  In today’s terribly tough economic environment Angel deals and Series A deals are few and very far in between.  Entrepreneurs are always looking for the magic bullet that will help their venture get funded.  The cold reality is that great stories and ideas are fundable – anything else simply won’t work.

A simple test entrepreneurs can take to see whether they truly have a fundable idea is to build a simple, yet compelling VC pitch.  Babak Nivi (aka Nivi) from VentureHacks recently gave a presentation to students participating in the Stanford Business Plan Competition.  The presentation lays out a brutally simply, but highly effective way to build a VC pitch.  He uses Marc Andreessen’s Ning as an example.  Now, not every entrepreneur is going to come up with Andreessen concepts like Mosaic, Netscape, Opsware, and Ning.  But if you can credibly build a pitch like the one described in the following presentation then at least you have a shot, even in today’s environment.

Now, what should you do if you can’t build a pitch like this because your idea is not as intuitive, simple, or just mind-blowing like Ning?  Stay tuned for another post on how to launch and then successfully exit a capital-light Web 2.0 business.
