Whacky Twitter Apps

May 6th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in Product Management, Social Media

There is no doubt that Twitter has become a critical new Internet platform.  Hundreds of new businesses are evolving to leverage Twitter – Twitterific, TweetDeck, TwitPic, TweetStats, etc.  Almost every Internet-savvy business or organization has a Twitter account.  And it shows no signs of ‘jumping the shark’, even with the recent addition of Oprah and the infamous Ashton Kutcher / CNN follower battle

In spite of all of the great Twitter applications that are being built today, there are definitely a few truly whacky ones.  In this post I’ll share three recent Twitter apps that stretch the limit of one’s imagination.

The first whacky Twitter app I came across was KickbeeDan Nosowitz at Gizmodo did a post in December entitled “Kickbee: Now the World Can Know What Your Fetus is Up To.”  To quote Dan “The Kickbee is a wearable device made of elastic and a whole mess of sensors and electronics. Piezo sensors detect the baby’s movement and transmit electrical charges to an Arduino Mini microcontroller, which in turn transmits the data to a Java application via Bluetooth. This Java app deciphers the meaning of the signals, and posts on Twitter when it determines the baby has kicked.  One of the more memorable tweets was “”Wow I’m being very active! I kicked Mommy 84 times at 03:44AM on Thu, Dec 11! 12:46 AM Dec 11th from web.”  Happily Tyler, the Kickbee’s author new baby boy was born January 19th and now has his own Twitter account.

The second Twitter app I stumbled across was the Tweeting Enabled Cat Door.  This application combines RFID tags which are attached to two cats’ collars.  The cats names are Gus and Penny and they have their own Twitter account.  When the cats approach the cat door, the RFID tag unlocks the door and a digital camera takes a snapshot of the cat coming and going through the door.  The application then generates an appropriate quip and posts a Twitpic and a Tweet.  Some of the more recent activity included:

  • http://twitpic.com/4oom1 – Penny is out with her BFF
  • 40 minutes ago from TwitPic http://twitpic.com/4oobl – Penny is in to play with her toy mouse.
  • 44 minutes ago from TwitPic http://twitpic.com/4omkp – Penny is going in the garden planting fresh catnip.

The third app I stumbled across this week was Blankomat, The Coffee Machine That Tweets.  As TechCrunch’s Robin Wauters recently reported “Here’s how it works: basically, a webcam attached to the coffee machine detects when the text on its display screen changes and sends the image to a computer, where it is matched with images in a database. When a match is found (which succeeds most of the time but not always, depending on how good the light is), a status update is automatically sent to the Blankomat Twitter account. The whole thing was set up by a 16-year old intern of the agency, probably when he had too much coffee.”  The Tweets are in German but thanks to Google Translate here are a few of the recent tweets:

  • about 10 hours ago from web 1 coffee
  • about 10 hours ago from web 1 coffee
  • about 12 hours ago from twitterrific FILL BEANS
  • about 113 hours ago from twitterrific EMPTY BIN

If there are three crazy Twitter apps like this out there, there are probably hundreds more.  You just can’t make this stuff up sometimes.
