Not Your Typical ‘We Met In A Bar’ Wedding Story

The Wall Street Journal’s Jennifer Rossa who writes for their Private Equity Beat did an amusing post today about the recent marriage of Rochelle Gores to David Fredston-Hermann.  Rochelle is the daughter of Alec Gores, the CEO of the Gores Group LLC.  David is the President of Long Green Capital Management, LLC.

The Gores Group is one of the industry’s most aggressive and effective investor “in acquiring controlling interests in mature and growing businesses which can benefit from the firm’s operating experience and flexible capital. Since its inception, Gores has acquired 60 companies worldwide with combined revenues in excess of 15 billion dollars. Currently, Gores has 1.7 billion dollars in equity under active management.”

To quote Jennifer’s post:

“According to the Times, the couple met over drinks in the West Village. He was on the phone talking to his boss about a pending acquisition and how much the company in question was worth. She overheard the conversation, and asked how many times Ebitda – earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization – his firm was offering.

When he replied eight times, she scoffed. “My daddy would never pay more than five,” she told him, the Times reported.

Awwwwwwwww.”

Not knowing anything else, it sounds like a match made in Heaven.  The Gores Group has shown that you take a mature business, acquire it at a reasonable price, and turn it into a long term, profitable, franchise.  Their portfolio companies may not be the Web 2.0 darlings, Twitter, or Facebook, but they produce solid profits and cash every day of the week, year after year.  In today’s turbulent times where would you invest your money?  In a bet-on-the-come opportunity like Twitter that is pondering it’s monetization strategy or on a sure fire 5X EBITDA firm that could become a 10X Restructured EBITDA firm overnight?  I bet Daddy is proud of his little girl.
