Why Announce Google Chrome OS Now? Because Microsoft is Announcing Cloud Version of Office on Monday . . .

The tech industry celebrated with joy this week’s announcement by Google of the Chrome OSA Google search on the term “Chrome OS” generates over 8 million results – for just the past 2 days.  The timing is a little interesting since it Chrome OS won’t be available to consumers until the second half of 2010.  So why did Google choose to announce it when most of America is still on their 4th of July vacation?  A number of bloggers, including the infamous Robert Scoble, suspect that Microsoft will be announcing their cloud version of Microsoft Office next Monday at the Microsoft it’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2009 in New Orleans on Monday.

As TechCrunch’s MG Zeigler noted in a post today:

“Almost immediately following the Chrome OS announcement, Robert Scoble took to his favorite home on the web, FriendFeed, to have one of his, I-know-something-you-don’t-know “discussions.” During the course of those “discussions,” Scoble dropped quite a few hints about what Microsoft planned to announce on Monday, including “Diego, no, it’s one of Microsoft’s primary businesses. Did you know Microsoft has 14 billion dollar businesses?” Guess what that is? Microsoft Office.

It doesn’t take a genius to put two and two together. And several bloggers already have. And it was especially easy after Scoble ruled out the new browser project Microsoft has code-named “Gazelle.” Scoble also noted that what Microsoft was showing off would run in browsers beyond just IE.”

Long Zheng, author of the istartedsomething.com blog, wrote an excellent post where he connected a number of fairly obvious dots.  Long recounts a couple of tweets from Mr. Scoble as well as from “Microsoft evangelist Keith Combs had been tweeting this week of some “secret Microsoft software”. Whilst I’m not sure if the two tweets are related to each other or related to this announcement, it appears at least one of the softwares would allow users to create content, which fits with the Office clue. If he is talking about the same software, why he doubts it might not work on Windows Server 2008 R2 remains a mystery.”  It’s worth taking a look at the full post.

I, for one, enjoy seeing tech titans battle each other.  In the early years of my career I loved seeing the big boys like IBM, DEC, Amdahl, Cullinet, and Computer Associates duke it out.  The Internet bubble took competitive trash talking to a new level.  Any announcement that can generate over 8 million news stories, blog posts, and comments in less than 7 days is fun. I can’t wait to see the community’s reaction to whatever Microsoft announces on Monday.
