Debunking Layoff Myths

Layoffs appear to be the most popular way for companies to cope with decreasing revenues and increasing expenses. It will be interesting to see, however, if these massive layoffs generate the benefits touted by company management. Bain & Company’s Darrell Rigby did a fascinating study in the Spring of 2002 where he analyzed the impact of post 9/11 layoffs. The analysis, entitled Debunking Layoff Myths, called into question the true efficacy and value of large scale layoffs. Rigby structured his analysis around the concepts of four layoff myths.

A 2009 Prescription for Venture Capital & Private Equity

VC and Private Equity firms need the Hubble Telescope to see exits for their portfolio companies these days. This post presents a ‘Modest Proposal’ for the creation of portfolio consolidation companies. The concept is very straight forward and do-able from an ‘operators’ point of view. I recently stumbled across Harvard Business Publishing’s Discussion Leader site – basically a compilation of the dozens of business thought leaders who write and blog for the Harvard Business Review.
